Title 1
PIP Welcomes you to a New School Year!

As the new school year starts we are beginning by involving all of the families of Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD). Our goal is to share with you the information we are learning and providing you with resources, skills, and contacts that will help you to become strong advocates for your students, in the school as well as the community.
What’s happening this year?

We are coming to you!!!! Beginning in October, AASD will set up Satellite sign language classes in various communities. *We need your input, therefore please complete the attachment and submit it to Dona Harris, School Social Worker no later than Wednesday, September 1.
Were you able to attend the Parent Involvement Program Workshops the previous school year? If so, you know the great topics that were discussed. This year will not be different except we would like to know the topics that interest you. *Please take the time to complete the attachment and return it to Dona Harris, School Social Worker no later than Wednesday, September 1.

Finally, two special topics will be discussed to start the school year to involve parents as partners with the school. Saturday, September 11, 10 AM- 2 PM, the Parent Involvement Program workshop will focus on Bullying and Suicide Prevention. This is a workshop that every person employed with AASD was mandated to attend and we want to be sure that parents have the same information.

Saturday, September 25, 10 AM- 2 PM, Parent Involvement Program workshop will host a Title 1 Conference- Parent Involvement Program Open House, “Meet the Community”. Attend and gain information about Title 1; what it means, what the funding is used for and how it affects AASD and you. Outside agencies and businesses will be invited to this special day to provide information regarding community resources.

Both days promise to be exciting and informative. As with all of our workshops we provide childcare, free tutoring for the AASD student through SES (Supplemental Educational Services) funding and light refreshments.
*(Please Note: If you attended AASD registration day and completed the attached forms you do not need to complete and submit the attached forms.)
We look forward to seeing many of you again and meeting some of you for the first time!

July 23, 2010

Dear AASD Families,

The Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 (ESEA), formally known as No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires schools identified as needing improvement to notify parents/guardians of the school’s academic achievement. The purpose of this letter is to notify our AASD families of the options available to students under ESEA. Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) is one of the cornerstones of the ESEA. It is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide tests. Title I schools that do not meet the State standard for AYP in the same subject for two or more consecutive years are placed in Needs Improvement (NI). The AYP status for Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD) is “Needs Improvement Year 6.”

As you are aware, AASD is a state school that provides special education services for deaf and hard of hearing students. AASD closely monitors student progress and regularly informs parents of individual student development. However, the state-wide assessments used to determine AYP compares our student test results to the test results of other schools in Georgia rather than individual student progress. AASD did not make AYP using the state-wide assessments to determine student achievement.

In compliance with the requirements of ESEA, all students enrolled in a school identified as “Needs Improvement” has the opportunity to enroll in a school not designated as Needs Improvement. “Public School Choice” is the official name of this transfer option. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) provides specific protections and procedures for students in special education. Therefore, parents/guardians interested in the “Public School Choice” option should contact their local school system to schedule an Individualized Education Program (IEP) conference to discuss placement options.
AASD will offer supplemental educational services (SES) for Free Tutoring. Supplemental educational services include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation, and other educational interventions designed to increase student achievement. These services will be provided at no cost. Enclosed please find the free tutoring application for the 2010-2011 school year. Please bring the completed form to the SES table on Registration Day or return to school to the attention of Gray McKenzie.
AASD will continue to implement a School Improvement Plan to address student achievement and improve student outcomes. We welcome and need your input in the development and implementation of our School Improvement Plan. Please contact my office at 404.296.7101, if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Kenney Moore

Guidance C-6 is for Advising Parents of the Right to Know Information about a Teacher’s Qualifications as Required by NCLB [Section 1111(6) (A) ESEA.]

August 16, 2010

Dear Parent(s)/Legal Guardian(s):

Your child attends Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, which receives Federal Title I funds to assist students in meeting state achievement standards. Your child’s school has not met these standards in Reading, English Language Arts and Math for 6 years consecutive years and therefore has not made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Due to not meeting these standards for 6 years your child’s school has been identified as a School in Need of Improvement.

At Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, we are very proud of our teachers and feel they are ready for the coming school year and are prepared to give your child a high-quality education. As a Title I school, we must meet federal regulations related to teacher qualifications as defined in the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965 (ESEA), formally known as No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) .These regulations allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials. We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:

•	Whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,
•	Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and
•	What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.

You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications.
Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled.

If you have any questions about your child’s assignment to a teacher or paraprofessional, please contact Mr. Kenney Moore, at Atlanta Area School for the Deaf at 404-298-3998 or email me at kemoore@doe.k12.ga.us.

Sincerely,
Kenney Moore

Subject: New Schedule - by: shattaway

Why a new composite schedule at the high school? What was wrong with last year's schedule?

1) Economics -- a 7 period day schedule is the most economical schedule for us to run -- our Block/Skinny schedule that we had last year is the most expensive to run

2) Student Achievement -- with our implementation of the seven period day on three days each week and block instruction two days each week we are giving our students the chance to dig deeper into the lab classes that they may have. We are also providing student remediation for standardized tests during the course of the school day through our development of "Tide Time" on Thursdays each week from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm.

*"Tide Time" is a 90 minute block of time that will be broken into two 45 minute segments. These segments will be used for remediation with students for standardized tests in areas that our students are struggling in. Readdressing (re-teaching) will also be done in the data strand areas where we don't quite match up to the RESA and State averages of student achievement. Make up work, re-testing, and a "Club Time" will also be embedded within this schedule in an effort to eliminate excuses for a lack of academic student success and promote extracurricular activity involvement for all of our students.

More information on our schedule will be coming soon.

Please feel free to ask questions.

Thank you for your interest in Long County High School!

You are so right! Papa and Granny have tried to instill "Sharing and Caring" all our married lives. Other points of view include a parent sitting on bedside for some one-on-one sharing. Including the children in "banking business" is a great idea. Children would benefit if they had their own bank account, a savings account, to learn responsibility. Setting goals, long and short, is vital to self-esteem. And remember, "A Family that Prays together, Stays together". Teaching R&R is not rest and recreation. Respect and Responsibility will help a child and parent to bond for life.

I whole heartedly agree that regular chores around the house are not paid chores. It's part of being in a family unit. But, yes, bigger once and a while chores are paid for in our house. Our children go to Washington DC when they are 9 with their grandmother and they save up and earn extra when there is a larger goal like that in mind. They are not allowed to use their chore money for candy and other certain items.

Did you ask that teacher to give you the extra homework? Maybe he/she will give it to you not as an assignment, but as extra nongraded challenge work that you can work on at your own pace at home. I know my child's teacher does that. Giving differentiated instruction AND homework is a common practice at my child's school. We love it.

I enjoy connecting with my son during weekend campouts. There are times of frustration and triumph when you see your child and others take what you teach them like cooking, camping or fishing and succeed or stumble on their own, but then continue to try and gain in the end.
