Has anyone experienced problems with a group of children being given a curriculum that is more advanced than what the other children in the same grade are getting? Specifically, there is one teacher giving homework that isn't required but would better prepare the children for the next higher grade. I would prefer that my child get the same homework because what she is being given now doesn't challenge her. I asked for my child to be moved and requested a teacher but what given another teacher that gives the same level of homework that is being given out now. If this were a private school, all children would be given the same information. Why is this not the case here? I feel that the principal hasn't taken me seriously. I've sent him several emails for which there have been no reply. I know it is not customary for parents to choose their child's teacher, but I also know that it is done all the time. Would it help to go to the school board or the Superintendent? I'm sure more parents would speak out but they don't know about it. I just want my child to be afforded the same opportunities as the next child. Please help!!! It's 5:15 AM. I'm losing sleep over this.

Did you ask that teacher to give you the extra homework? Maybe he/she will give it to you not as an assignment, but as extra nongraded challenge work that you can work on at your own pace at home. I know my child's teacher does that. Giving differentiated instruction AND homework is a common practice at my child's school. We love it.
